About Kaarigar
Fashion relies on the uncelebrated expertise and finesse of the often uncelebrated craftsman, who dyes,
weaves, embroiders, without celebrity. Kaarigar (Urdu translation of the word Artisan) is a tribute to
craftsmanship and artistry that has survived generations and still manages to enthrall by its sheer beauty.

Kaarigar products attempt to mesh the old and the new where traditional patterns and techniques are
adapted to fit urban, contemporary style. Kaarigar pieces are hand embroidered, hand made and truly
one of a kind.
Most Kaarigar pieces are made using a fabric called KHADI (www.kvic.org.in). Indigenous to India,
Khadi was born eighty years ago as a weapon against British Colonial rule. Hand spun and hand woven,
it symbolized freedom and self reliance by encouraging Indians to spin and weave their own cloth.
Still today, Khadi is spun and woven by village cooperatives using hand operated looms. Extremely
comfortable and wearable, Khadi is a “green” fabric promotes a planet friendly lifestyle! Each piece
made by Kaarigar is unique and makes for a beautiful gift.

We want to thank the Jharkhand Khadi Gramudyog Association for spinning our fabric and
acknowledge all the craftsmen who have worked their magic to make Kaarigar pieces come to life.
